Steven Collins studeerde in 1987 af als advocaat na een Master Recht op Trinity Hall in Cambridge. Vervolgens maakte hij een carrièreswitch en verdiepte zich in TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language). Hij woonde en gaf les in Italie en Spanje en in 1993 keerde hij terug naar Londen om zijn boek te schrijven en een school te openen voor praktisch Engels voor gevorderden.
