Michel Vandenbroeck werkte twintig jaar bij het VBJK Expertisecentrum voor Opvoeding en Kinderopvang, in Gent, België. Hij leidde er diverse projecten in verband met kwaliteitsverbetering en toegankelijkheid van de kinderopvang en het omgaan met diversiteit. Hij was mede-oprichter van het Europese netwerk DECET (Diversity in Early Childhood Education and Training). In 2004 promoveerde hij aan de Vakgroep Sociale Agogiek (Faculteit Psychologie en Pedagogische Wetenschappen) van de Universiteit Gent, met een proefschrift over de geschiedenis van de Vlaamse kinderopvang en de pedagogiekontwikkeling in deze sector.
