John Lewis Gaddis is de internationaal gerenommeerde schrijver van De Koude Oorlog en werd door The New York Times de decaan van Koude Oorlog-historici genoemd. Hij is de Robert A. Lovetthoogleraar geschiedenis aan Yale University en de auteur van talloze boeken. Met het boek 'George F. Kennan, An American Life' heeft hij onder andere de Pulitzer Prize for Biography 2012 gewonnen. Hij won in 2005 de US National Humanities Medal en richtte het Wilson Center's Cold War International History Project op.
