The New Anti-Catholicism
The Last Acceptable Prejudice
Paperback Engels 2004 9780195176049Samenvatting
Changing cultural sensibilities have made it ever less acceptable publicly to utter once-familiar American stereotypes about the great majority of ethnic or religious groups. Issues of gender and sexual orientation are also now treated with great sensitivity. A statement that is seen as racist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic or homophobic can haunt a speaker for years, and even destroy a public career. Yet, notes Philip Jenkins, there is one massive exception to this general rule: it is still possible to make remarkably hostile and vituperative public statements about Roman Catholicism without fear of serious repercussions. In the media, Catholicism is treated as a legitimate target; Catholic opinions, doctrines, and individual leaders are frequently the butt of harsh satire. Jenkins seeks to shine a light on the widespread anti-Catholic sentiment in American society and to determine its causes.
