Samenvatting

'Huguenot Gazettes of Exile, 1671-1701' offers the first comprehensive study of the French-language newspapers published in the Dutch Republic between 1620 and 1701, tracing their evolution from the earliest translated gazettes to the internationally renowned Huguenot press. Based on the examination of more than 4,000 newspaper issues preserved in libraries and archives across Europe, the book reconstructs the emergence of a francophone newspaper tradition that developed at the intersection of political conflict, religious exile, commercial exchange, and editorial innovation. Moving beyond narratives centred exclusively on the Gazette de Leyde, the study analyses the editorial practices, news networks, readership, circulation, censorship, and commercial organisation of the Huguenot gazettes. It demonstrates that their authority rested not only on the reporting of political events but also on the integration of editorial judgement, bookselling networks, advertising, and transnational refugee communities into a remarkably effective system of communication. The book further examines how Huguenot editors challenged the information monopoly of the Gazette de Paris, adapted Dutch newspaper traditions to a francophone readership, and transformed advertisements into instruments of commercial expansion and communal cohesion. By bringing together political communication, editorial culture, material history, and the economics of print, 'Huguenot Gazettes of Exile, 1671-1701' argues that the Huguenot press should be understood not simply as a collection of refugee newspapers, but as a transnational communication institution that reshaped the circulation of information across early modern Europe.
