Harvey Cushing
A Life in Surgery
Paperback Engels 2007 9780195329612Samenvatting
Harvey Cushing (1869-1939) was the leading figure in the creation of modern neurosurgery. Taking advantage of improvements in anesthesia and antisepsis, and rigorously developing surgical techniques in animal experiments, Cushing did more than anyone else to make it possible to remove tumors and do other operations on the brain without killing patients. This biography traces his education at Yale, Harvard Medical School, and Johns Hopkins; his surgical career at Johns Hopkins and Brigham Hospital in Boston; and his career as a battlefield surgeon during World War I. Cushing's name has become part of medical lexicography through "Cushing's sydrome" and "Cushing's disease," and he has an enduring place in the field of medicine.
