This book provides a novel account of faith. It examines how this virtue, viewed from a worldly perspective, empowers people to live with a sense of meaning, feelings of equanimity and self-worth, and open-ended trust, despite the contingent and fallible nature of our lives. To be sure, particular faiths promise many other special spiritual benefits. However, the account in this book usefully serves to identify what all robust expressions of personal faith have in common, whether they are articulated in relation to one or another religious or humanist tradition. The book examines the powers of faith, the grounds and truth of faith, and the micro-dynamics of faith. The book reviews and analyzes troubling expressions of faith, which, although sometimes appearing excessive, are often shaped in practice by underlying feelings of distrust, suspicion, and resentment, which are the marks of weak faith.
