The Ovenist

The Ovenist

Some stories refuse to stay buried.

Born in the unforgiving streets of Amsterdam, Joop's life is shaped by hardship long before the Second World War begins. As a marine, he is swept into the chaos of the Pacific, captured by the Japanese, and forced to endure the horrors of the Burma Railway.

Surviving the war is only the beginning.

Seeking peace, Joop emigrates to Australia, determined to leave the past behind. But when an extraordinary opal and a forgotten manuscript begin to reveal long-buried secrets, the life he carefully rebuilt starts to unravel.

As memories return and hidden truths emerge, Joop must decide whether some stories are better left untold—or whether the truth, however painful, deserves to be known.

Spanning war-torn Asia, Europe, and Australia, The Ovenist is a gripping historical novel about courage, survival, friendship, and the enduring weight of memory. Richly atmospheric and deeply human, it is a story of resilience and the price of keeping secrets.

Because some stories refuse to stay buried.
