The Mighty Experiment
Free Labor versus Slavery in British Emancipation
Paperback Engels 2004 9780195176292Samenvatting
After creating a complex system of slavery that stretched across the Atlantic and was considered integral to overseas expansion, in the late eighteenth century the British Empire became the first to divest itself of slavery. Both opponents and defenders of slavery seized the opportunity to bring rational empirical arguments and scientific principles to bear on systems of labor. In this book, Seymour Drescher explores the history of the debate over slavery and free labor within Britain, examining the contributions made by scholars and politicians who were instrumental in the formation of social sciences, most notably demography, political economy, and racial science. The abolition of slavery became, for them, an experiment that would test scientific principles and was driven by British politics.
